Preservation of Liberty

"The preservation of liberty depends upon the intellectual and moral character of the people. As long as knowledge and virtue are diffused generally among the body of a nation, it is impossible they should be enslaved." --John Adams

Not just knowledge. Not just virtue. Both.

Having spent the last hour reading you blog I have to say it was one of the best Sunday morning reading I have done in a long time.

I don't dare say more for fear of showing my lack of intellect. But I throughly enjoyed reading John Adams and have become something of a history buff because of it.

Adams is correct, but we are doomed only if we say and think we are. Churchill said "Never give in!" and because he never did give in, we won WWII. So no despair allowed. Socrates didn't give in. Lincoln didn't give in. Churchill didn't give in. And we mustn't.

Sounds wonderful, and I promise I'll do my share, but might I point out that 2 of your 3 examples ended rather poorly...of course we all have to go some time.

They may have ended early, but not poorly. And what they left behind is immortal.
