News for Locals

For those who will be local this summer, I will be teaching a three-evening course called "Jealousy in Tragedy and Romance: William Shakespeare’s Othello and The Winter’s Tale." Meetings will be on Wednesday evenings, August 3, 10, & 17, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Discover Shakespeare’s anatomy of jealousy in the great tragic contest between Desdemona and Iago for the soul of Othello, the Moor of Venice. Then discover the healing power of grace as depicted in Shakespeare’s late romance of the jealous Leontes and his virtuous wife Hermione.

Homework for the course: Read Othello before the first class and The Winter’s Tale before the second. Any copy of the plays will do. No essays, quizzes, tests, or exams. Class participation welcomed.

To sign up, contact S. Weiner at The Bishop's School (858/459-4021 x 235) or weiners@bishops.com.

In addition: Group tickets for members of the class will be available for the performance of The Winter’s Tale at the Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park on Sunday evening, August 21.

On that evening I will be introducing the play before the performance in a free “Shakespeare in the Garden” talk open to the public.

I will also be introducing a performance of Macbeth at the Old Globe in a free "Shakespeare in the Garden" talk open to the public on Sunday evening, July 31.
